After
much planning and preparation, Middlebury’s landmark Town Hall Theater
is being transformed.
The historic Queen Anne-style building opened in 1884 and housed a 600-seat theater, but
fell on hard times. The brick walls were buckling from the strain of holding up the slate roof, which leaked. It
was so porous that bats and pigeons had no trouble finding their way into the building.
"The town sold the building in the 1950’s, and since then a lot of maintenance had been deferred," says Executive Director Douglas Anderson, whose non-profit organization purchased the building in 2000.
Design and construction management is being handled by Bread Loaf Corporation of Middlebury.
